How to convert a fraction to a percentage

This calculator uses the following system to perform the conversion:

The first step is to reduce the fraction. The simplified fraction is converted to decimal by simply dividing the numerator by the denominator. The decimal of the fraction is then multiplied by 100 to find the equivalent percentage.

As an example, if we are converting the fraction 4000/50000 the conversion will require the following steps:

$ \frac{4000}{50000} = \frac{2}{25} = 0.08 = \frac{8}{100} = 8\% $

Of course, in the above example we could skip the conversion to decimal and multiply both numerator and denominator of the reduced fraction by 4 to obtain 8/100:

$ \frac{4000}{50000} = \frac{2}{25} = \frac{2 \times 4}{25 \times 4} = \frac{8}{100} = 8\% $

... or even more simply, divide the original fraction's numerator and denominator by 500, to calculate the percentage in a single step:

$ \frac{4000}{50000} = \frac{4000 / 500}{50000 /500} = \frac{8}{100} = 8\% $

Fraction to percentage conversion formula

$ percentage = \left( \frac{numerator}{denominator} \times 100 \right) \% $
